The Pediatric Student Interest Group (PSIG) at the UAB School of Dentistry has officially transitioned into a recognized Student Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), expanding opportunities for students to engage with the specialty at a national level.

The new designation connects UAB dental students with national AAPD resources, including reduced fees for events such as the Annual Session and access to exclusive educational publications. The affiliation also strengthens ties to local and regional AAPD components, offering opportunities for mentorship, continuing education and collaboration with pediatric dental leaders.

“This milestone opens the door for students to get more involved on a national level and learn from pediatric dental professionals across the country,” said Isabel Burwitz, a fourth-year dental student and president of PSIG. “I’m so proud of how our group has grown and to see our efforts recognized through this new AAPD chapter status. It’s an exciting opportunity to grow as future clinicians while advancing our shared passion for children’s oral health.”

Faculty advisor Yu-Yin Lin, D.D.S., M.S., assistant professor in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry, said the transition reflects the group’s commitment to advancing pediatric oral health through education and service.

“Whether students plan to pursue pediatric dentistry or incorporate care for children into general practice, this affiliation enhances their professional development and our shared commitment to children’s oral health,” Lin said. “We encourage all students to get involved by attending meetings, participating in outreach and connecting with mentors who can help guide their growth in caring for young patients.”

Chapter membership is open to all UAB School of Dentistry students, regardless of specialty interest. The chapter’s leadership team is planning new initiatives to expand engagement and foster connection to local and regional conferences. Students interested in joining or learning more are encouraged to attend upcoming meetings or reach out to current members.
