Ethan Madison, D.D.S., a third-year resident in the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Dentistry’s Department of Periodontology, has been named the recipient of the Mark K. Setter Leadership in Periodontology and Dental Implantology Award by the American Academy of Periodontology Foundation.
The prestigious national honor recognizes outstanding leadership and commitment to the advancement of periodontology and implant dentistry. Madison was formally recognized at the 111th AAP Annual Meeting, held October 15-18 in Toronto, Ontario.
“Receiving this award is a reflection of the mentorship and leadership I've experienced at UAB,” Madison said. “It's an honor to represent our department and school and contribute to the future of periodontology through roles with our national organizations and research.”
Madison’s leadership and service extend across multiple regional and national service and research initiatives. He has served on the AAP Resident Retreat (ARRive) workgroup committee, as an AAP Foundation Ambassador, and contributed to the Dental Implant Restoration Registry study through the National Dental Practice-Based Research Network (PBRN). He was also a 2024 Albert Schweitzer Fellow, and credits earlier opportunities prior to his time at UAB for shaping his path.
“We are incredibly proud of Dr. Madison’s accomplishments and the leadership he continues to demonstrate,” said Mia Geisinger, D.D.S., Acting Chair of the Department of Periodontology. “His recognition by the AAP Foundation is a testament to his dedication, and it reflects the strength of our program and the values we instill in our residents.”
Madison’s recognition highlights the School of Dentistry’s focus on professional and personal development of our students, staff, and faculty and UAB SOD’s continued impact on the national stage and its commitment to developing future leaders in oral healthcare.
