What was your path into periodontology and to UAB?
While in dental school at UAB, I worked on a clinical research project with Dr. Michael Reddy and the Department of Periodontology. This ultimately led to a presentation at the International Association of Dental Research meeting and a publication in a peer-review journal, and it was during this experience that I fell in love with the specialty of periodontology.
What surprised you about your career in periodontology after UAB?
I have been surprised by the reward of treating patients in a private practice environment and the involvement in my local community. I find it very rewarding to develop deep, long-term relationships with patients while helping them improve their oral health. I also enjoy working with my interdisciplinary colleagues to deliver high levels of care for our patients.
What advice would you give someone entering a career in periodontology now?
Get involved! Whether it is in your local community, on the state level, nationally, or all of these, take a seat at the table. Involvement will lead to personal and professional development, camaraderie and friendships that are sustaining. And you have a unique perspective that you can bring to help improve the landscape for our profession, for the patients we treat, and for the next generation of dental healthcare professionals.
How do you give back to your profession and to UAB and why do you think that is important?
I currently serve as the president-elect for the UAB dental alumni association and teach in the graduate periodontology clinic periodically throughout the year. Locally, I provide many educational opportunities for dentists and dental hygienists as director of both the River Region Study Club (our local chapter of the Seattle Study Club) and a local dental hygiene study club. I think that it is important to support the school of dentistry for the sustainability of high-quality dentistry in Alabama. Also, I feel a calling to providing opportunities for fellow practitioners to improve knowledge, hone clinical skills, and develop personally.
