The Bridges to the Baccalaureate Research Training Program (BBRT) provides an intro into advanced biomedical research careers for students at Jefferson State Community College (JSCC) transferring to the University of Alabama at Birmingham
Program Mission:
The program’s mission is to assist students pursuing advanced education and careers in biomedical research by giving them the foundation to become innovative thinkers and problem solvers It is part of a larger National Institute of Health (NIH) initiative
Requirements:
- United States citizen, non -citizen national, or permanent resident of the U.S.
- Complete 2 full years at a community college as a full –time student with GPA of 3.0
- Transfer to UAB and matriculate as a full -time student UAB majoring in a biomedical science discipline
- Commit to completing two summer research internships
- Actively conduct biomedical research in a mentored UAB research laboratory as a Bridges Trainee for 10 hrs. after transferring to UAB
- Accept training appointment for 12 months
- Preference given to students with an interest in Biomedical or Behavioral careers
- Open to high school seniors planning on entering to JSCC as freshmen the following school year

- The research phase of the program continues into the academic school year and trainees receive additional compensation

- Trainees receive a monthly stipend during their sophomore year at JS and junior year at UAB
- UAB and JS tuition and fee assistance
- An advisor that follows your progress until you graduate from JS and a mentor throughout your final two years at UAB.
- Research experience with the expectation of preparing trainees for a career in biomedical science and having at least one publication prior to graduating from UAB
- Travel assistance to national conferences to present your research
- Scholarship opportunities upon transferring from JS to UAB as a Bridges Trainee
