University of Alabama at Birmingham student artist Bailey Barrow of Pinson has been named a Student of the Year through the American Advertising Federation Birmingham TEN Awards.
Barrow, a senior College of Arts and Sciences’ Department of Art and Art History major, is the only student in Alabama to receive this award for 2016. The award recognizes exceptional design students who are actively participating in the design discipline and community.
Barrow represented UAB at the A2RU Emerging Creatives Student Summit in Detroit in March, and her group won a $1,500 grant for their concept to create a community project to be undertaken this fall at UAB. UAB student Cima Khademi is a collaborator and co-author on the project, called “Arts &.”
In order to emphasize the importance of the arts in undergraduate research, and promote arts-centered interdisciplinary collaboration, the “Arts &” initiative will create a space and opportunity for students of differing disciplines to unite ideas for the production of creative and unique solutions and/or innovations. This initiative will be scheduled in monthly salons in the DAAH Project Space to inspire creativity and unification among a diverse group of students, who will be granted the opportunity to form teams and accomplish an identified project.
Barrow is also in the Bachelor of Fine Arts program and is a media intern on the UAB Digital Media summer team. She is studying animation and creating an animated scene for the extended version of “Bad Medicine,” an animated info-graphic video for the team’s award-winning KNOW DOPE campaign, a heroin prevention and awareness campaign funded by the United States Department of Justice and U.S. Attorney Joyce Vance for the Northern District of Alabama. The extended version has additional scenes intended for a professional audience and will be used to educate people in government and the health care industry.
