Ryan Roque, an undergraduate Biology major in the UAB Global and Community Leadership Honors Program, has been awarded a UAB Honors College Experiential Fellowship. This fellowship is designed to support second year students for a summer of experiential learning. Ryan will receive funding from the Honors College for a 10-week program during which he will devote 20 hours per week to a project of his own choosing. Ryan’s project, “Using Growth Hormone Gene Removal to Alleviate Muscular Dystrophy,” will be mentored by Dr. Liou Sun, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biology. The project involves knocking out the growth hormone gene and observing how it affects the muscular development of zebra-fish. Using the potential results, he intends to find ways to alleviate zebra fish with muscular dystrophy. Ryan, along with the other Honors College Experiential fellows, will share his project’s progress at the UAB Summer Expo.
