Since 1998, CORD has advanced UAB’s mission of community engagement through impactful K–12 STEM education initiatives across Birmingham and beyond. Each year, CORD delivers dozens of programs—including summer camps, science fairs, in-class laboratories, and internships.
“EBSCO’s support of the Summer Science Research Internships has empowered CORD to provide all students—regardless of financial circumstances—with the opportunity to fully participate, gain hands-on research experience, and spark lasting enthusiasm for careers in science,” said Mike Wyss, Ph.D., CORD Director.
SSI III places 25 high school students in UAB’s state-of-the-art laboratories to conduct research under the mentorship of UAB faculty and student researchers. Students also participate in weekly seminars on STEM careers, attend educational workshops, and present their findings at a campus-wide research symposium.
EBSCO’s mission to address systemic challenges and foster a sustainable, brighter future for Alabama strongly aligns with CORD’s commitment to providing meaningful, future-focused learning opportunities to students across the state. With outcomes showing that over 99% of SSI III participants go on to major in STEM fields and 97% pursue STEM careers, this continued partnership is making a measurable impact—empowering the next generation of scientists, innovators, and leaders.
