Biosafety
UAB is internationally known for excellence in biomedical research and UAB leadership has highlighted safety as an integral part of research excellence. The Biosafety Program, operating within the Department of Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S), is tasked with the development and implementation of UAB policies and procedures aimed at protecting people and the environment from the hazards associated with recombinant, biological, and infectious or invasive agents and materials used and stored on campus. UAB’s Biosafety Program is based on federal, state, and local regulatory codes, as well as accepted best biosafety practices.
Biosafety is achieved through the combined use of containment controls, including meticulous workplace and administrative practices, state-of-the art facilities and engineering controls, and the proper use of personal protective equipment. The Biosafety Program serves the UAB community by providing training and guidance to faculty, staff, and students on how to best utilize these containment controls to ensure personal, public, and environmental safety. Please reach out and let us know how we can support your efforts.
