The University of Alabama at Birmingham recognized 61 student veterans graduating this spring during its annual Coins and Cords Ceremony, held Wednesday, April 30, in the Hill Student Center.
Hosted by UAB Veterans Services, the event celebrated the service, sacrifice and academic success of student veterans completing their degrees in spring 2025. Each honoree received a red, white and blue cord to wear during commencement. Graduates with a cumulative GPA of 3.4 or higher were also awarded a commemorative challenge coin in recognition of academic excellence.
“We wanted to find a way to let our veterans know we care about them and their success in the classroom, as well as in life after college,” said Walter C. Stewart III, director of Veterans Services. “This coin will serve as a reminder of that.”
Veterans from both on-campus and online programs were honored at the ceremony. Many of UAB’s student veterans pursue flexible online degrees to accommodate active duty service or other responsibilities.
