Service to the Community

UAB students, faculty and staff will come together with Birmingham community organizations on Saturday, Sept. 19, for Into the Streets, UAB’s longest-running day of service.

Led by Student Engagement, Into the Streets connects hundreds of Blazers with local nonprofit organizations and community partners for hands-on service projects throughout Birmingham. Each project aligns with one of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, helping students connect their service to broader community needs.

This year’s event will take on added significance as it will observe the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks through a day of service and remembrance.

Several service projects will focus on supporting Birmingham’s local veteran community. The morning will begin with a memorial component during the event’s kickoff, presented in partnership with UAB Veteran Services, giving participants an opportunity to reflect on the lives and communities affected by Sept. 11 and consider how service can carry those values of unity and civic responsibility forward.

The day begins at 8 a.m. with check-in at the Gold/McMahon Courtyard, followed by the kickoff and memorial at 8:30 a.m. Volunteers will depart for their service projects at 9:30 a.m., with projects running from 10 a.m. to noon. Transportation will be provided for select projects.

Through Into the Streets, students have an opportunity to do more than complete service hours. They can build relationships with community partners, develop leadership and teamwork skills, and see firsthand how their actions can contribute to the Birmingham community.

Interested in serving? Students, faculty and staff can register for Into the Streets through BlazerPulse. (Projects offering transportation will be identified as “Transportation Provided” in the project title.)
