Included on this page are suggested continuing education opportunities to meet your professional development needs as a preceptor. Please note that some educational resources on this page are not provided by the Department of Nutrition Sciences, so questions should be directed to the appropriate host referenced.

Earn CPE for Being a Preceptor

Did you know Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDNs) can earn CPE simply for being a preceptor to dietetics students?

RDN preceptors of ACEND-accredited programs can record up to 3 CPE per year and 15 CPE per five-year recertification cycle for serving as a preceptor. Please refer to the Commission on Dietetic Registration website for more information. Contact the Dietetics Practice Coordinator with your completed Preceptor Confirmation & Self-Reflection Form for verification and signature.

CPEs for Preceptor Training

RDNs can earn 8 CPE for completing the Nutrition and Dietetics Preceptor Training Course provided by the Accreditation Council on Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND). To learn more, visit the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics' website.

Clinical Case Studies

The MS in Nutrition Sciences – Clinical Track/ Dietetic Internship students complete clinical case studies during their inpatient clinical supervised practice rotations. The purpose of these case studies is to apply evidence-based guidelines and emerging research in different patient scenarios using the Nutrition Care Process.

Presentation topics are dependent on each students’ clinical exposures, but all presentations begin with an overview of the pathophysiology of the disease state followed by the implementation of the Nutrition Care Process.

Active UAB clinical track/dietetic internship preceptors are invited to attend the live, virtual case study presentations (4-5 per year). While not pre-approved for CPE, these are CPE eligible live events and preceptors will be provided the information needed to submit to their Professional Development Portfolio.

More information will be provided to preceptors as the case study dates approach, but please contact the Program Director or Dietetics Practice Coordinator with any questions.

More Information

More information for preceptors has been made available from the Nutrition and Dietetics Educators and Preceptors (NDEP) group of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

For more continuing education opportunities, refer to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics or the Commission on Dietetic Registration.
