UAB School of Health Professions is excited to announce a new degree program within the Department of Clinical and Diagnostic Sciences. The Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) undergraduate program provides its students with the skills they need to work in a clinical laboratory.
“There is a growing need for these roles across the country,” said Floyd Josephat, Ed.D., program director for both Medical Laboratory Science programs and interim chair of the Department of Clinical and Diagnostic Sciences. “You can just pick a state, and they have a need, which means our graduates are available to work anywhere.”
Currently, UAB is the only school in the state of Alabama to offer students a master’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science. It’s also one of the largest programs in the Southeast, with an average of 40 to 50 students in the program each semester. Students who are interested in enrolling in the undergraduate program can begin doing so in the fall 2026 semester.
In addition to UAB’s requirements, to gain admission to the BS MLS program requires specific prerequisites. To view those requirements and the application process, click here.
“We are excited to begin enrolling students this semester,” said Josephat, “We are committed to training the next generation of medical laboratory professionals. This expansion is a testament to that dedication, and we look forward to seeing our students this fall.”
