Jenkins named chair of Occupational Therapy
Gavin Jenkins, Ph.D., has been named chair of the UAB Department of Occupational Therapy. Jenkins, whose research interests include assistive technology, pedagogical affect, learning performance, and the influence of green spaces and built environment on occupational participation, has worked and researched in the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom and the United States.

The UAB School of Health Professions recently gained approval by the University of Alabama Board of Trustees to launch a new Master of Science in Healthcare Simulation program.
The degree program is designed to prepare students to lead within organizations using simulation to improve quality of care and impact patient outcomes. An entirely online program, students will have the flexibility to complete their degrees while working full time.
“My vision for this program is to develop leaders in the use of simulation to improve the care we provide to our patients,” said Michelle Brown, program director. “There is a growing number of simulation centers throughout the country and we want to help ensure leaders in those centers are prepared to serve a diverse group of students and healthcare professionals.”
Students will receive a strong foundation in simulation as an educational methodology as well as evidence-based quality and patient safety strategies.

Accreditation through CAHIIM is the highest achievable education and curriculum standard available for MSHI programs.
Donna Martin – Distinguished Alumni Award
Donna S. Martin, a 1977 graduate of what was then the UAB Master of Science in Clinical Nutrition/Dietetics program, is the UAB School of Health Professions’ 2017 Distinguished Alumni Award winner. Martin becomes only the 48th person to earn the highest honor awarded to our alumni – a number that is even more impressive when you consider we have more than 18,000 graduates in our history.

The Alabama Dietetic Association (ALDA), an affiliate of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, has named Carleton Rivers, MS, RDN, program director of the UAB School of Health Professions’ Master of Science in Nutrition Sciences – Clinical Track – Dietetic Internship program, the Recognized Young Dietitian of the Year. Each year, affiliates of the Academy name a Recognized Young Dietitian to recognize the excellence of dietitians age 35 or younger.

Featheringill, a key contributor to Birmingham’s ascent as an internationally recognized center for health care, has been honored by one of his former companies with a UAB scholarship in his name.The William W. Featheringill Scholarship in Health Informatics, established by his daughter Elizabeth Pharo, was endowed by SuccessEHS to honor Featheringill’s legacy as a visionary in health informatics.The endowment will support students in the UAB School of Health Professions’ Master of Science in Health Informatics program. UAB OT students learn therapy tricks from illusionist Kevin Spencer
Kevin Spencer is an illusionist and artist who has performed magic in front of tens of thousands of people on stages in 34 countries on six continents.A day ahead of performing his “Theatre of Illusion” at the UAB Alys Stephens Center, he delivered a performance in front of a crowd of only 50, but it was a performance that has the potential to impact tens of thousands of people around the world.
