In order to assure excellence in the protection of human research participants, the HRPP submission and review process, and training and mentorship in the conduct of human subjects research, Trainees will no longer be permitted to serve as Principal Investigator on HRPP submissions effective April 1, 2025.
Key Changes:
-
- Principal Investigator Requirements: Trainees, including students (undergraduate, graduate, and professional), residents, interns, postdoctoral trainees, and medical fellows are no longer permitted to serve as Principal Investigator for projects involving human subjects research.
Individuals serving as PI on an HRPP submission must meet criteria in the UAB policy "Definition of a Principal Investigator".
- Trainee personnel roles: Trainees who will be engaged in human subjects research must generally be listed as a Sub-investigator or Other Personnel on the HRPP submission.
