See UAB’s Innovative Teaching page for details about each of these units and academic initiatives. Phillips has served as Vice Provost since 2022.

Prior to his current role, Phillips directed UAB’s Center for Teaching and Learning (2015-2023). Under his direction, the Center experienced unprecedented growth and assisted hundreds of faculty members from each of UAB’s schools and colleges as they participated in thousands of hours of teacher development workshops. The CTL’s Teaching Certification program and motivational structure, which Phillips developed, were featured in the October 2018 issue of The Chronicle of Higher Education.

Scott has over 30 years of teaching experience. He joined the UAB faculty in 2008 and holds a tenured academic appointment as Associate Professor of Music Technology. In addition to a record of outstanding university teaching, Phillips has extensive experience in music and video production. He is also an active scholar whose interests include the use of technology in teaching and curriculum development. His book, Beyond Sound: The College and Career Guide in Music Technology (Oxford University Press, 2013) is the seminal work on university music technology curriculum development in the United States. Phillips is Past-President of the National Association for Technology in Music Instruction, and former Chair of the Technology Advisory Committee of the College Music Society.
