As a Birmingham native, Dr. Heidi Hernandez graduated in 2019 from the University of Alabama at Birmingham with a bachelor of science degree, majoring in neuroscience and minoring in chemistry, biology, and psychology. She continued her education at the UAB School of Optometry, where she gained an interest in the diagnosis and management of neuro-ophthalmic disease. This led her to pursue further training and specialization through an advanced two-year optometric residency in neuro-ophthalmic disease at The Eye Institute at the Pennsylvania College of Optometry, Drexel University.

During residency, Dr. Hernandez managed complex neuro-ophthalmic cases and collaborated with specialists in neurology, neuro-radiology, and neurosurgery. From her experience at UABSO and throughout her time at The Eye Institute, she developed a passion for teaching and clinical instruction to inspire future optometrists.
