UAB Optometry’s Private Practice Club was the recipient of the Preston Cup Award given by the Student Optometric Leadership Network. The honor was presented at the annual Student Private Practice Symposium and Leadership Conference.
Malia McDowell, club president, and Trista Marrie Bennett, incoming president, represented UAB at the event and shared their reactions after learning of the win.
“My initial reaction to winning the Preston Cup was gratitude,” Bennett said. “I feel extremely grateful for this honor.”
The activity that allowed the club to stand out amongst the competition were thoughtful and personalized initiatives, including class-specific gifts tailored to each academic year. For instance, first-year students received clipboards, while fourth-year students were given more advanced tools. Which further highlighted the importance of collaboration within the optometric community at UAB.
“The most rewarding part was inspiring other Private Practice Clubs across the nation,” McDowell said. “No matter the size of your club or the amount of money in your account, any Private Practice Club can host memorable events that help student members learn about private practice.”
Both McDowell and Bennett credited their organization’s success with a dedicated executive board, active members, generous sponsors, guest speakers and the strong support of doctors who shared their knowledge and experience with students.
