Connie Wright, Director of Student Affairs, who has impacted generations of UAB School of Optometry students, was awarded the Dean’s Outstanding Staff award at the 2025 Convocation and Hooding Ceremony.

Since her first graduating class in 1999, Wright has been among the first faces many students see when they begin their journey at UAB Optometry. With a calm demeanor, unwavering patience, and a thoughtful approach to every task, she has guided countless students from recruitment through graduation. Her role is not just administrative—it’s meaningful.

“I’ve been blessed to play a small role in the lives of a number of our graduates through the years,” Wright said. “Some I’ve known since they were in undergraduate school, asking admissions questions and going through the application process. Watching them grow from nervous, excited first-year optometry students to confident graduates walking across the stage to receive their degree is incredibly rewarding.”

The connections developed over time extend beyond graduation. “I especially value the relationships that have developed along the way. Seeing these 'kids' go on to not only build successful careers providing quality eye care but also to building beautiful, loving families makes my heart smile,” Wright said.

Wright works in close partnership with Dr. Gerald Simon, forming a dynamic duo that has helped shape the school’s reputation for academic excellence. Together, they’ve developed a proven formula for recruiting top-tier students—those with exceptional academic records and the drive to succeed in the field of optometry.

“Connie is dedicated, compassionate, and has a strong commitment to student success,” said Dean Kelly K. Nichols. “She personifies the belief that at UAB Optometry, it’s not just about education—it’s about family. It was an honor to select her for this award.”
