Andrew P. Plaxco, OD, MPH, FAAO, has joined the faculty of the UAB School of Optometry as an assistant professor.

Plaxco, a graduate of Southern College of Optometry, brings a diverse background in clinical care and public health to his new role. His career began with a residency in ocular disease at the Memphis VA Medical Center, followed by work with a corneal specialist in private practice in Richmond, Virginia.

With a passion for service, Plaxco accepted a civilian position with the U.S. Army at Fort Lee, where he provided eye care to service members, retirees and their families. He also provided optometric services to inmates within the Virginia Department of Corrections.

Plaxco’s interest in science, vision and helping patients see led him to become an optometrist. His interest in education began during his undergraduate studies at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

“I had several excellent mentors there and always enjoyed the collegiate atmosphere,” he said. “This was reinforced in optometry school and residency, both of which I enjoyed greatly. I find it very rewarding to work with our students.”

Plaxco said his favorite aspect of being both an optometrist and educator is the lifelong learning required in both roles.

There is one lesson he wants each student to have as a takeaway. through optometry school and after entering the profession.

“It’s what you do after school that really matters,” he said. “Please remain curious in your field and compassionate to those who seek your care. Success will come naturally from there.”
