The National Alumni Society’s Blazer Fast 40 Award recognizes alumni-led businesses that exemplify innovation, leadership and community impact. Valencia Wells, OD, owner of Morris Avenue Eye Care, received the inaugural award.

“I believe God has orchestrated every step of my journey to business ownership.”  Wells said.

This foundational belief fuels her dedication to providing the best possible care to her patients each day. She ensures every patient feels seen, heard and genuinely cared for.

"We prioritize building trust and long-term relationships not only within our office, but throughout the Birmingham community,” she said. “Our team is committed to making a meaningful impact through outreach, education and accessible care.”

Wells, Class of 2009, has held leadership positions at UAB Optometry and the university since graduating. She served six years on the UAB National Alumni Society Junior Board, is immediate past president of the UABSO Alumni Association, and currently serves on the Dean’s Strategic Advisory Committee.

Additionally, Wells remains engaged with optometry students through involvement in student recruitment. She frequently participates in panel discussions and leads contact lens workshops to support and mentor future optometrists. “These opportunities have helped shape me as a professional and allowed me to give back to the institution that helped shape me,” she said. “The UAB community has provided a supportive network and a platform for mentorship, advocacy, and continuous growth.”

Through her dedication to optometry, community impact, leadership and innovation, Wells exemplifies the qualities of a Blazer Fast 40 Award recipient.
