University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Nursing Professor and Associate Dean for Clinical and Global Partnerships Michele Talley, PhD, CRNP, ACNP-BC, FAANP, FNAP, FAAN (MSN 2005, PhD 2015), is President-Elect of the Gerontological Advanced Practice Nurses Association. GAPNA represents the interests of advanced practice nurses, clinicians, educators and researchers involved in the practice or advancement of caring for older adults. Talley previously served as GAPNA Treasurer and is looking forward to continuing to contribute to the organization’s mission.

“I’m delighted about the opportunity to serve as GAPNA’s President-Elect and to help shape a future where advanced practice nurses lead the way in expert care for older adults,” Talley said. “I want to champion our mission while expanding opportunities for our members and partners."

Talley’s research focuses on diabetes care, interprofessional models of care, integrated behavioral health and care of the uninsured. She serves as Director of the Providing Access to Health Care (PATH) Clinic and is board certified as an adult acute care nurse practitioner. She also is a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing, the American Association of Nurse Practitioners and the National Academies of Practice. In 2021, Talley was named one of the School’s 70 Visionary Leaders.

In 2022, Talley received the Nurse Practitioner Alliance of Alabama’s Preceptor of the Year Award for her hands-on mentorship and support for preceptorship of nurse practitioners at the PATH Clinic. In 2023, she was named an Outstanding Community Site Mentor by the Albert Schweitzer Fellowship of Alabama.

Talley’s term as President-Elect begins this month, and she was sworn in at the GAPNA Annual Conference in Las Vegas. She is one of nearly a dozen UABSON faculty members serving in leadership roles in national nursing organizations this year.

“Leadership is embedded in the culture of UAB School of Nursing, where we empower innovative and diverse leaders to transform health and health care. Through education, research and practice, we promote equitable and sustainable well-being—especially for vulnerable populations. The School supports abundant opportunities to lead and make a meaningful impact locally and globally.”

Retired Professor Natalie Baker, DNP, ANP-BC, GNP-BC, CNE, GS-C, FAANP, FAAN (BSN 1985, MSN 1990, DNP 2010), also previously served as GAPNA President from 2021-22.
