Effective Oct. 1, 2026, the UAB Hospital-Callahan Eye Emergency Department will become UAB Hospital-Callahan Eye Urgent Care.
The UAB Hospital-Callahan Eye Emergency Department will permanently close at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30, and UAB Hospital-Callahan Eye Urgent Care will begin operating at 8 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 1.
“We are committed to providing patients with the expert, world-class eye care they have come to know at Callahan,” said Brenda Carlisle, UAB Hospital CEO. “Patients will continue to have access to specialized evaluation and treatment for urgent eye conditions by UAB Hospital-Callahan Eye providers on-site during operating hours.”
UAB Hospital-Callahan Eye Urgent Care is a walk-in clinic for urgent eye concerns. No appointment is needed.
Effective Oct. 1, UAB Hospital-Callahan Eye Urgent Care’s hours will be:
- Monday-Friday: 8 a.m.-8 p.m.
- Saturday: 8 a.m.-3 p.m.
- Sunday: 1-5 p.m.
For urgent eye problems outside of these new hours, patients should visit the nearest emergency department for evaluation. If needed, the physicians there can coordinate with UAB Hospital-Callahan Eye for additional ophthalmology care.
Patients experiencing urgent eye concerns, including sudden vision loss or changes, eye injuries, flashes and floaters, eye pain, or other vision-related symptoms, can continue to rely on UAB Hospital-Callahan Eye for expert specialty care.
