UAB offers transfer students a comprehensive range of services and resources to help them achieve their goals on and off campus. From one-on-one advising to competitive scholarships and campus-wide support services, the University of Alabama at Birmingham is committed to helping transfer students by offering resources tailored to their needs and focused on guiding them to success.

Academic support and tutoring
Academic help centers can be found across UAB’s campus and are available to all students. The Math Learning Lab, located in Heritage Hall 202, offers students enrolled in MA 094-227 free tutoring by graduate mathematics students. For writing support, students can go to the Mervyn Sterne Library to access the UAB Writing Center where they can find assistance with all stages of the writing process across all subjects. Services are free for all UAB students. Through UAB Libraries, students can book private study rooms and access research assistance and guides, databases and e-journals.

Scholarships designed for transfer students
UAB offers merit-based scholarships specifically for transfer students, which are awarded automatically through the admission application process:

  • Transfer Excellence Scholarship – $4,000 for students with a GPA between 3.5-4.0
  • Transfer Pathway Scholarship – $2,000 for students with a GPA between 3.0-3.49
  • Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship – $3,000 for eligible members with a GPA of 3.0-4.0

Students must transfer directly from a community college to be eligible for these awards. Documentation must be received by the March 1 deadline for fall admissions and Dec. 1 deadline for spring admissions.

Blazer Scholarship Management and Resource Tool, or BSMART, is available to all students, including incoming transfers. This tool allows students to search and apply for scholarship opportunities beyond the awards made to students automatically upon admission.

Personalized academic advising
Advising appointments are another critical resource for transfer students. Academic advisers assist students in identifying their goals and developing educational plans, understanding degree requirements, navigating course schedules and accessing campus-wide resources. Advisers also help students understand university policies and explore potential majors and career paths.

Even before prospective students enroll, UAB provides an adviser on staff in Undergraduate Admissions to help them navigate transfer credit equivalencies and understand their path to a UAB degree.

Digital tools for success
The UAB app serves as a one-stop platform for students, providing access to class schedules, campus dining, the library search, UAB News, student events and more. It also connects students to tools like Rave Guardian, UABwell, BlazerNET and the UAB Cares portal.

For career preparation, Handshake, UAB’s online career platform, enables students to search and apply for internships, part-time and full-time jobs, RSVP for career events, upload application materials and book appointments with career consultants.

Honors College opportunities
Transfer students with a GPA of 3.5 or higher and at least 12 hours of college credit may be eligible for admission into the UAB Honors College. Prospective current and transfer students should apply online and meet with an honors adviser to discuss possible admission based on their existing academic profiles and future trajectories.

Student Health Services
UAB’s Student Health Services is a comprehensive, on-campus medical clinic that offers a broad range of appointment-based services tailored for students. Located in the Student Health and Wellness Center, the clinic provides primary care for routine illnesses, check-ups, minor injuries and common infections. Specialized services are available and SHS offers many specialties, like mental health care, sports medicine, and women’s and reproductive health.

Vulcan Materials Academic Success Center
The Vulcan Materials Academic Success Center, on the second floor of Sterne Library, provides services to undergraduate students including tutoring, supplemental instruction, academic advising, success advising, workshops and study hours.
