Student Shopping In the Blazer Kitchen 2022 This annual fundraiser ensures year-round food security through UAB’s on-campus food pantry Blazer Kitchen, which offers nutritious food to patients, employees and students in need.Help the University of Alabama at Birmingham provide healthy food to patients, students and employees in need by giving to Blazers Against Hunger this November.

Blazers Against Hunger is an annual fundraiser throughout the month of November to ensure year-round food security for the people in UAB’s community. Proceeds support Blazer Kitchen, UAB’s on-campus food pantry. Blazer Kitchen offers nutritious food, essential resources, and referrals to patients, employees and students in need. More than half of its annual budget comes from money raised through the Blazers Against Hunger fundraiser.

Created in 2017, Blazer Kitchen is supported by the Benevolent Fund with gifts from UAB faculty and staff and has provided more than 1 million meals since it opened its doors. Members of the UAB community in need can shop just as they would at a grocery store, but at no cost. The food pantry’s staff and volunteers are committed to treating every visitor with dignity, compassion and respect.

Financial contributions mean Blazer Kitchen can purchase food for a cost share of 18 cents per pound through a partnership with the Community Food Bank of Central Alabama. That savings means much more food can be purchased, and many more meals provided.

Blazer Kitchen provides more than 10,000 pounds of food each month, serving more than 2,000 shoppers each year with several convenient locations around campus, including Hill Student Center. The food pantry assists a wide range of individuals within the UAB community, from students who may be skipping meals to stretch their budget until the next paycheck or a grandparent raising grandchildren, to patients who are newly diagnosed with a medical condition and need access to safe, nutritious food.

“Your generosity fuels Blazer Kitchen’s mission of providing essential food, hygiene items and cleaning supplies to students, employees and referred patients,” said Lisa Higginbotham, Benevolent Fund program manager. “With your support, we can continue to nourish hope and dignity across UAB.”
