Actors in costume on stageLearn the the meaning of Día de Muertos with traditional live music, regional dances of Mexico and colorful costumes.A bilingual, bicultural musical for young audiences that teaches about the holiday Día de Muertos — using traditional Mexican music and dance — is set for a performance at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

UAB’s Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center will present “Sugar Skull! A Día de Muertos Musical Adventure” at 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 5. This interactive, engaging show is recommended for ages 6-12. “Sugar Skull!” takes audiences on a magical journey to understand the meaning of Día de Muertos, or Day of the Dead.

It tells the story of Vita Flores, a 13-year-old from Queens, New York, who does not understand why her family makes such a big deal about Día de Muertos, when her friends are celebrating Halloween. A candy skeleton on her abuelita’s ofrenda comes to life to show her the meaning behind her roots and these rituals. With charismatic Sugar Skull and many other colorful characters, Vita learns Day of the Dead is much more than just a party — it is a celebration of life.

Featuring regional dances of Mexico and colorful costumes, “Sugar Skull!” offers a deeper understanding of Mexican and Latin American culture.

Tickets are from $15. Buy tickets. Visit AlysStephens.org or call 205-975-2787.

Come early for fun art activities from UAB’s ArtPlay Community Education before the show in the Alys Stephens Center lobby, 1200 10th Ave. South.
