UAB MARC Application

To contribute to building a pool of well-trained scientists in the biomedical research workforce, the NIH NIGMS T34 Maximizing Access to Research Careers (MARC) Program at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) will provide up to 2 years of mentored research, education, and career development activities for 10 undergraduates (scholars) every two years (matriculating five each year) from groups in biomedical research for preparation and transition into PhD or MD-PhD programs.

Scholars will be matched with experienced, funded UAB faculty preceptors who will mentor them and provide high-quality research experiences in biomedical sciences. The program curriculum will be tailored to each scholar’s needs to prepare them for success in doctoral training. It will address objectives that include critical thinking, quantitative skills development, scientific writing, presentation skills, ethics in research, networking, research career, exposure readiness, and preparation for graduate school, with scholars’ progress assessed quarterly.

To be considered for the UAB MARC, please complete the given application. One component of the application is a personal statement. Please tell us Who you are, What you think you want to do in life, and How the UAB MARC will help you in your future academic career.

Finally, based on the information you submitted on the application, we will request two reference letters. This document is a brief form to be filled out on your behalf by course faculty, research mentors, or extracurricular advisors.
