Oliver Gramlich, PhD

Associate Professor

Areas of Interest
pathobiology of vision loss in optic neuropathies and autoimmune demyelinating disorders

Dr. Oliver Gramlich's research focuses on the pathobiology of vision loss in optic neuropathies and autoimmune demyelinating disorders, with an emphasis on inflammation-mediated retinal ganglion cell death and optic nerve degeneration. Dr. Gramlich’s laboratory employs a range of experimental approaches, including human-derived samples, 3D organoid systems, and innovative animal models of glaucoma, multiple sclerosis, and antibody-mediated demyelination. His work integrates retinal imaging, electrophysiology, molecular and immunological techniques, and statistical modeling to develop novel strategies for preventing vision loss.

Dr. Gramlich earned his Ph.D. in Neurobiology and Experimental Ophthalmology from Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz in Germany and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Experimental Ophthalmology at the same institution. Before joining UAB, he held research faculty positions at the University of Iowa and was a principal investigator at the Veterans Affairs Center for the Prevention and Treatment of Visual Loss.
