Top 10 Reasons to be an OB/GYN Resident at UAB
10. Successful Fellowship Match Rate
Not only do we offer four separate OB/GYN fellowships at UAB, we also place fellows at extremely competitive fellowship programs. See some of the most recent matches below.
9. Resident Education is a Priority
Weekly didactics mixed with hands-on learning opportunities are an integral part of our program. These include biweekly, division-specific didactics and bimonthly Quality Improvement conferences and Journal Clubs. We have dedicated education staff members and a resident education committee whose sole purpose is to ensure quality resident educational experiences.
8. Practice Makes Perfect
Dr. Somerall, our Director of Simulation, coordinates individual laparoscopic skills training and “spontaneous” in-unit simulations covering a wide variety of clinical scenarios including post-partum hemorrhage, eclamptic seizure, and shoulder dystocia. This allows residents to master managing high-risk medical complications in a low-risk, education-driven environment.
In addition, we have a Da Vinci robot as well as laparoscopic skills and ultrasound simulators to help hone your skills.
7. Resident Benefits
As a UAB resident, you are well taken care of. Here’s a list of some of the perks of being a UAB resident.

5. Birmingham
Birmingham is a beautiful, fun city that is affordable and easy to navigate. We have numerous local breweries and enjoy award-winning cuisine from chefs like James Beard Award winner, Frank Stitt. Between the Birmingham Museum of Art, Civil Rights Institute, Zoo, Botanical Gardens, Birmingham Barons Baseball, and Alabama Ballet, there is something for everyone. There are opportunities for running, hiking, and biking at Railroad Park, Red Mountain Park, Jemison Trail, and Oak Mountain State Park. Additionally, there are lakes, mountains, and beaches that are all close by. A good football tailgate is right down the road in Auburn or Tuscaloosa, and the SEC is headquartered here. Our residents find that the city is very family friendly, and over half us own our own homes.
4. World-Class Facilities
The aesthetically-pleasing Women and Infants' Center is a $140 million, lone-standing women’s hospital that allows us to continue to set the standard in Obstetrics and Gynecology. The hospital is over 400,000-square-feet and features patient rooms, nursing stations, and physician work areas that are spacious and well-equipped, and we enjoy a beautiful view of Birmingham from the glassed skywalks that connect us to the Children’s Hospital and UAB’s Main Hospital.
3. Unmatched Clinical Experience
We provide care to very sick, complex patients. We are the major referral center in the state of Alabama and take care of patients from all over the Southeast. After four years here, our residents are primed for success in private practice, academic medicine, or fellowship. Best of all, our interns are in the OR on day 1 of the residency!
2. Cutting-Edge Research
Our department is consistently ranked as one of the highest NIH-funded Obstetrics and Gynecology departments in the country, and, as residents, we have the opportunity to conduct research with faculty who are leaders in their fields through the Center for Women's Reproductive Health.
1. Our People
The secret to our department’s success lies in our people. Our residents are a well-rounded, hard-working, fun-loving, ambitious, and intelligent bunch. The relationship between our faculty and residents is one of mutual respect that allows residents to learn in a nurturing, supportive environment. We make the best of our time together outside of work and are sure to celebrate life’s milestones together. Come see for yourself!
