The UAB Department of Urology has launched the Genitourinary Reconstruction and Prosthetics Fellowship, a one-year, high-volume clinical fellowship designed to provide in-depth training in complex reconstructive urology. The fellowship is accredited through the Society of Genitourinary Reconstructive Surgeons.
Under the leadership of Adam S. Baumgarten, M.D., associate professor and vice chair of clinical affairs, the fellowship offers a comprehensive curriculum that prepares future leaders in genitourinary reconstruction through rigorous operative experience, academic development, and hands-on teaching opportunities.
Fellows will gain advanced surgical training in a wide range of procedures, including urethral reconstruction, urologic prosthetics, Peyronie’s disease management, ureteral and male genital reconstruction, and genitourinary trauma care. Training is conducted using both open and robotic platforms, including SP and Xi systems. Additional exposure is offered through UAB’s multidisciplinary Spina Bifida clinic and transitional urology program.
"This fellowship reflects our commitment to advancing surgical excellence and developing the next generation of leaders in reconstructive urology,” Baumgarten said. “Fellows will train in a collaborative, high-volume environment that supports both clinical mastery and scholarly growth."
Fellows will serve as attendings with operative responsibilities three to four days per week, a light call schedule, and opportunities for moonlighting. The program also places a strong emphasis on academic output, with support for research presentations at national and international conferences and manuscript preparation for peer-reviewed publications.
Teaching is an integral part of the experience, with fellows contributing to resident education in both operative and didactic settings.
