The American College of Surgeons has recognized the UAB Department of Surgery as a Surgical Quality Partner across numerous areas of patient care. This achievement is due to UAB's participation in five leading registries that focus on the highest standards of surgical care:
- Commission on Cancer Accreditation (CoC)
- National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP)
- National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC)
- Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation (MBSAQIP)
- Trauma Quality Improvement Program (TQIP)
UAB Surgery has been nominated as a high-quality organization for its care of patients diagnosed with cancer, those undergoing breast surgery for malignant nodules, individuals receiving bariatric surgery, and traumatic injury patients.
“The UAB Department of Surgery is proud to be recognized by the ACS, a society at the forefront of excellence in surgical care, for our accomplishments in cancer treatment, our initiatives to improve trauma care, and our care for patients requiring metabolic surgery. This achievement is only possible due to the engaged division directors and energetic faculty members who support this initiative and believe in UAB Surgery's potential to be among the very best in the field,” says Executive Vice Chair of the UAB Department of Surgery Gregory Kennedy, M.D., Ph.D.
About the American College of Surgeons’ Quality Programs
The ACS has created 13 quality programs that aim to provide high-quality surgical care in all areas, including pediatric surgery, bariatric surgery, colorectal surgery, breast surgery, vascular surgery, trauma surgery, surgical oncology, and emergency surgery.
To become an ACS surgical quality partner, hospitals must participate in an extensive site visit and commit to sharing their surgical outcomes, processes, and program structures. They are also required to adopt standardized training, infrastructure, and patient care pathways.
