ACSUAB General Surgery Residency Program resident Alizeh Abbas, M.D., has been selected as a recipient of the UAB Office of Postdoctoral Education Travel Award.

Abbas received the award to attend the 2025 Clinical Congress of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and present two oral presentations under the mentorship of UAB Division of Gastrointestinal Surgery Director Daniel Chu, M.D., MSPH.

Among her projects presented at ACS, Abbas discussed patient engagement technologies in colorectal surgery and caregiver perspectives on the barriers and facilitators to a smooth surgical journey for patients with gastrointestinal cancers.

"We are proud that Dr. Abbas has been recognized for her exceptional projects submitted to ACS and has received scholarships to present at the conference for the second year in a row. This award is a testament to her hard work in improving patient engagement technologies and colorectal cancer research," says Chu.

In 2024, Abbas was awarded an ACS Resident Research Scholarship, which provides $30,000 annually for two years to support her research and academic pursuits.

The travel award allows postdoctoral scholars at UAB to fund experiences that will impact their professional development and further their careers in academic medicine. The award is specifically designed for trainees presenting oral presentations at national or international conferences.

Awarded to only four postdoctoral scholars, awardees are selected based on the potential impact of attendance at the scientific conference to the career development of the applicant as well as the research productivity of the applicant during their postdoctoral training as judged by publication and presentations in national and international meetings.
