After more than three decades of dedicated service, Susan Branscum is retiring from her role in the Department of Pediatrics (DOP) at UAB, leaving a significant legacy in research and education.
Her career began in the Army as a Sergeant First Class before transitioning to the DOP Neurology division with Dr. Alan Percy. She later joined the DOP Infectious Disease Division, working under Dr. Richard Whitley and Dr. David Kimberlin for over 25 years. Starting as Program Coordinator II, she was promoted to Clinical Research Regulatory Coordinator with the Collaborative Antiviral Study Group (CASG), now known as the Congenital and Perinatal Infections Consortium (CPIC).
Susan’s impact at UAB is significant and widespread. Notably, she was one of the founding members of the Alabama Society of Clinical Research Associates (SOCRA) Chapter over 14 years ago, establishing a strong foundation for research education that continues to thrive today. Additionally, she has played a crucial role in assisting more than 200 investigators through the DOP Pediatric Research Office (PRO), guiding them through complex regulatory questions and supporting their work with unwavering expertise.
In addition to her roles at UAB's PRO and CASG/CPIC, Susan made important contributions to the development of the UAB IRB’s SMART IRB system, which streamlined the approval process for research studies. She also played a key role in establishing the Research Training Program at UAB, ensuring that both new and experienced researchers had access to the resources and knowledge necessary for success.
Throughout her career, Susan has served as a mentor, leader, and advocate for research education and regulatory compliance. Her contributions have made a significant impact on UAB and the wider research community. As she retires, we recognize the conclusion of a remarkable chapter in the Department of Pediatrics. When asked about her plans following retirement, Susan remarked, “I don’t know what I will be when I grow up.”
We thank Susan for her dedicated service and significant contributions over the years. Her legacy will inspire those she mentored, and she will always be a valued member of the UAB DOP family. We wish her a fulfilling and well-deserved retirement.
