The University of Alabama at Birmingham Department of Pediatrics David Askenazi, M.D., professor in the Division of Pediatric Nephrology, was recently recognized with the Nephrology Kidney Collaborative (NKC) Founder’s award at this year’s Pediatric Academic Society Membership dinner.
The award celebrates Askenazi’s remarkable vision, dedication and leadership over the past 11 years, which have been the driving force behind the creation and growth of the NKC. What began as a small group of colleagues that shared interests has, under his guidance, evolved into a thriving international community devoted to improving outcomes for neonates with or at risk for kidney disease.
The award, thoughtfully designed in the shape of tree, a leaf or the intricate branching of the kidney’s vasculature, symbolizes the seed Askenazi planted when he first proposed the idea of the NKC. His work has helped transform the field of neonatal nephrology and continues to inspire collaboration and innovation worldwide.
“I’m deeply honored by this recognition but even more grateful for the incredible community that has grown around the Neonatal Kidney Collaborative,” said Askenazi. “What started as a small group of interested people has expanded to an international community that is making a tremendous impact in the care of neonates with kidney disease.”
His leadership and dedication have left a lasting impact on the field and continue to advance research and care for infants with kidney disease. Congratulations to Askenazi on this well-deserved honor.
