The twelfth annual Blazer Bolt for Brain Cancer 5K and Fun Run was held Saturday, May 17, at Railroad Park in Birmingham, Alabama.
Despite the thunderstorms that rolled in early Saturday morning, racers still showed up, participated and made the event a success.
Proceeds from the event, sponsored by Blazer Bolt Inc., were donated to support brain cancer research and patient support services at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and Children’s of Alabama.
This year’s 957 registrants, some of which participated virtually, made up a record-breaking 60 teams comprised of patients, caregivers, clinicians, researchers, UAB faculty and staff, and brain cancer advocates and supporters.
Prior to the start of the event, Steve Ponte, this year’s race announcer, shared each teams’ name and recognized donors and event sponsors. Eric Thomas delivered the invocation and representatives from the Homewood National Guard presented the colors while Mary Hawkins, a member of the UAB Division of Neuro-Oncology, sang the national anthem.
In addition to the 5K and fun run, the Blazer Bolt featured the Memorial and Survivor Walk, which was established in 2018. During the Survivor Walk, brain cancer survivors crossed the finish line alongside their loved ones while being celebrated by event attendees. “This weekend’s support was overwhelming for those who have lost loved ones and for those who are battling brain cancer,” said Department of Neurology Associate Professor Rhodemarie Maron, D.O.
The day before the race, UAB, in collaboration with the American Brain Tumor Association, hosted the FamilyStrong Meeting for Brain Tumor Patients and Caregivers at the UAB Hill Student Center. This meeting provided information to brain tumor patients and their caregivers about the latest treatments options, common challenges and helpful community support resources.
