University of Alabama at Birmingham Department of Neurosurgery Assistant Professor Jesse Jones, M.D., has been promoted to associate professor and awarded tenure.
Jones earned his medical degree from the Chicago University School of Medicine and completed his internship in neurological surgery at Los Angeles County Medical Center (LAC+USC), which is now known as Los Angeles General Medical Center (LA General). He went on to complete dual residencies in neurological surgery at LA General and in diagnostic radiology at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA)School of Medicine, followed by subspecialty fellowships in neuroradiology at LA General and UCLA, as well as interventional neuroradiology at UCLA.
Jones is trained in both diagnostic and interventional neuroradiology, specializing in cerebral and spinal vascular disease that affects both adult and pediatric patients. His research interests include stroke, vasospasm and biomedical device development.
During his time at UAB, Jones has been selected to lead the institution’s participation in the national Medtronic-sponsored EMBOLISE trial, evaluating the safety and efficacy of middle meningeal artery embolization with the Onyx™ Liquid Embolic System for the treatment of subdural hematomas. In addition, Jones was named a recipient of the competitive 2024 Blazer Bridge Fund grant, awarded to advance “Flexi-coat,” an innovative biomedical device coating developed in collaboration with Department of Materials Science and Engineering Associate Professor Vinoy Thomas, Ph.D. The project was one of only six selected for funding out of 27 applications across UAB.
As an associate professor with tenure, Jones will further his clinical and research efforts while continuing to mentor the next generation of neurosurgeons and neuroradiologists.
