The Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) Super 7 football state championship games showcased more than just athletic talent this past year. Patients from the UAB Sports & Exercise Medicine clinic and Children’s of Alabama took center stage as honorary captains, representing resilience, determination, and hope on the state’s largest high school sports stage.
These young individuals, nominated by Sports & Exercise Medicine faculty members, received the unique honor of participating in one of the most celebrated traditions of championship football. Each honorary captain, joined by their families, was welcomed to the event with special recognition.
Before kickoff, the honorary captains were introduced to the crowd, celebrated for their courage, and applauded for their inspiring journeys. During the pregame ceremony, these honorary captains participated in the ceremonial coin toss. Their presence marks the importance of perseverance, both on and off the field, serving as a reminder of the strength it takes to overcome challenges.
Robert Andrew “Drew” Ferguson, former Director of Operations and Head Athletic Trainer for UAB Sports & Exercise Medicine, created the Honorary Captain Program, giving children an experience of a lifetime outside of their medical journeys.
“Drew understood the impact that the Honorary Captains Program had on these families and would stop at nothing to create the best experience possible,” says Ashley Williamson, MSHA, Administration Manager for UAB Sports & Exercise Medicine.
“I am extremely lucky to have spent a handful of these weeks with Drew and learn the value of community, hospitality, and relationships outside of the hospital. I am grateful to transition into his role for the Honorary Captains Program and hope to maintain the same standards that Drew set.”
The faculty’s nominations for this program highlighted patients who exemplify the spirit of teamwork, determination, and a commitment to recovery. By spotlighting these nine young individuals ranging in age from 8 to 18, UAB Sports & Exercise Medicine faculty brought attention to the remarkable resilience of these young patients.
The UAB Sports & Exercise Medicine clinics play a vital role in providing care and rehabilitation to young athletes and active children. From injury prevention, concussion management, and treatment of chronic sports-related conditions, these clinics boasts teams dedicated to optimizing the health and performance of young athletes.
