Mosa joins the department from the University of Missouri, where he served as an associate professor of Biomedical Informatics in the Department of Biomedical Informatics, Biostatistics and Medical Epidemiology, and senior director of Informatics Technology.

A trained computational scientist, Mosa holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in computer science and earned his doctorate in biomedical informatics. His background supports more than 12 years of research, scholarly work and leadership in academic health care. His career has focused on using data and technology to advance clinical and translational research.

As vice chair, Mosa’s immediate focus is to build relationships and understand the unique strengths and challenges within the department and the broader UAB research ecosystem. He aims to elevate UAB’s leadership in clinical research informatics and AI-enabled translational science by strengthening technical capabilities, developing national partnerships, and mentoring future leaders.

“Stepping into the role of vice chair for Clinical Research Informatics represents a natural and exciting evolution in my career,” said Mosa. “This role brings together my technical, academic, and leadership experience in one of the nation’s most forward-thinking academic health centers.”

Mosa chose UAB for its commitment to innovation, data science, and translational research, and the opportunity to make an institution-wide impact through informatics leadership while contributing to national initiatives.

“UAB’s infrastructure and vision for integrating AI and biomedical informatics into its research enterprise is truly compelling,” said Mosa. “I was also inspired by the department’s collaborative culture and strong leadership—factors that made UAB feel like the right environment to take the next step in my career.”

In addition to his institutional role, Mosa is actively involved in national informatics leadership. He is a fellow of the American Medical Informatics Association, a board member of i2b2 transMART Foundation, and serves as vice chair of the AMIA 2025 Annual Symposium.

He also mentors emerging professionals in AI and biomedical research, with a focus on building a diverse, skilled workforce in health data science. At UAB, he aims to foster a collaborative environment where data, technology, and people come together to drive discovery and improve health outcomes.
