The Department of Biomedical Informatics and Data Science welcomes new assistant professor, Jinzhuang Dou, Ph.D.douj squareJinzhuang Dou, Ph.D.

Dou attended the Ocean University of China, where he earned a B.S. and M.S. in Applied Mathematics and a Ph.D. in Genetics. After completing his Ph.D., he became a postdoctoral research fellow at the Genome Institute of Singapore. Then, he worked as a data scientist at MD Anderson Cancer Center.

His research is currently focused on statistics, computer science, cancer, and complex disease. By integrating statistical and computational methods, he aims to enhance the understanding of health and provide insights into the genetic and molecular mechanisms that drive complex diseases.

Dou chose to join UAB for its strong academic and research community. “The UAB Heersink School of Medicine is internationally recognized for its excellence in biomedical research and clinical care, making it an ideal environment for a computational biologist like me,” he said.

Dou hopes to establish a computational research group dedicated to furthering knowledge of complex diseases. He also plans to utilize state-of-the art AI technology and single-cell sequencing/spatial transcriptomics to better understand tumor progression. His future goal is to use this information to aid with personalized cancer treatment.

Dou plans to collaborate with researchers across many different fields and the UAB O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center to help provide a foundation for advancing his translational research. He welcomes collaboration in fields such as cancer evolution, immune therapies, and the use of single cell sequencing and spatial transcriptomics to aid clinical research.

Outside of his research work, Dou enjoys tennis, mahjong, and spending time with friends.
