The Annual Translational and Transformative Informatics Symposium, hosted by the Department of Biomedical Informatics and Data Science, marked a key milestone this year by partnering with the inaugural AI Nephrology Symposium. Held in the newly opened Altec/Styslinger Genomic and Data Sciences Building, this joint event was the first to take place in the state-of-the-art facility.

The symposium provided attendees with a broad overview of current advancements in bioinformatics, cloud computing, clinical genomics, biomedical research, and bioinformatics education. Researchers and data scientists from a range of institutions came together to share insights and foster collaborations aimed at advancing precision medicine.

This year’s keynote speakers were Girish N. Nadkarni, M.D., Irene and Dr. Arthur M. Fishberg Professor of Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, and Michael Snyder, Ph.D., Stanford W. Ascherman Professor of Genetics and director of the Stanford Center for Genomics and Personalized Medicine. Both delivered engaging presentations on the role of AI and remote data technologies in healthcare.

Nadkarni discussed AI-guided detection of under-recognized cardiomyopathies using point-of-care cardiac ultrasound. He emphasized AI’s potential to improve diagnosis and treatment, particularly in frontline clinical settings.

Snyder highlighted the role of wearable technologies such as smartwatches and continuous glucose monitors in detecting early signs of illness—often days before symptoms appear. He also discussed the value of personalized health recommendations, pointing out how individual responses to diet, stress, and activity can vary widely.

In addition to the keynote presentations, the symposium featured a poster session showcasing a variety of research projects. Attendees engaged with presenters to discuss methods, explore results, and consider the potential impact of their work.

ATTIS poster sessionThe symposium also featured breakout groups focused on specific topics, offering participants the chance to dive deeper into key areas and engage in detailed discussions.

Networking opportunities throughout the event facilitated valuable connections among attendees from various institutions.
