The 2025 AI and Technology in Global Health Symposium brought together an inspiring mix of global health leaders, researchers, clinicians, innovators, and students, all united by one goal: finding ways for AI and emerging technologies to help close the gaps that still exist in health around the globe.thumbnail global

Held October 29-30 at the Marnix E. Heersink Conference Center and co-hosted by the Mary Heersink Institute for Global Health and the Marnix E. Heersink Institute for Biomedical Innovation in collaboration with UAB and International partners, the event reflected what “bridging divides” truly means. Throughout two packed days, participants explored how technology can ethically support stronger, and more equitable health outcomes in communities both well-resourced and underserved.

What we experienced

The symposium felt energetic and collaborative from the start. Attendees and speakers joined from across continents, bringing diverse perspectives and on-the-ground experience from over 23 countries.

The agenda covered a wide range of timely topics. Everything from AI-assisted diagnostics and medical imaging to maternal and women’s health, cancer care, data privacy, and global disease prevention. Workshops offered hands-on opportunities to learn new tools, ask questions in real time, and build skills around AI basics and biomedical innovation.

One thing that came through clearly: everyone was thinking not just about what technology can do, but what it should do, and how global communities can work together to make sure AI tools are ethical, scalable, and genuinely helpful in real-world settings.

A space for fresh ideas

In addition to the keynotes and talks, the pitch competition was a highlight for many. Innovators shared creative solutions with the potential to make a tangible impact, and the collaborative feedback environment encouraged participants to dream big while staying grounded in global health needs. global conf

Between sessions, the hallways were full of conversation. Researchers were meeting future collaborators, students were connecting with mentors, and colleagues from partner institutions like Maastricht University and Thammasat University strengthening global ties.

Many attendees shared how fulfilling it felt to learn from one another and to see such a wide range of global perspectives represented in one place.

The ideas shared over these two days are just the beginning and we have already seen new collaborations and look forward to tracking them.
