“Lead Infinitely equips current and future health care leaders with the mindset and tools to navigate complexity with purpose. This first cohort represents a meaningful step toward building a culture grounded in trust, adaptability, and long-term impact,” shares Matt Sherrer, M.D., MBA, FASA, FAACD, associate professor and clinical consultant to LDO.
Rooted in the work of Sherrer and colleagues, the workshop draws from concepts introduced by James P. Carse in “Finite and Infinite Games” and expanded upon by Simon Sinek in “The Infinite Game”. These foundational ideas explore the distinction between finite games (played with the goal of winning) and infinite games (played with the purpose of continuing the play). In the clinical and academic medical environment, this mindset shift encourages long-term thinking, sustained innovation, and a commitment to continual growth.
The new concept of Infinite Anesthesia, developed by Sherrer and Dan Berkowitz, M.D., invites health care professionals to reimagine their roles through five essential practices: advance a just cause, build trusting teams, study your worthy rivals, prepare for existential flexibility, and demonstrate the courage to lead.
Over the course of the workshop series, participants engaged with these practices through facilitated sessions and group discussions tailored to the unique challenges of clinical leadership and teamwork. The program aimed to cultivate forward-thinking leaders who can champion culture change, foster collaboration, and remain agile in the face of evolving health care landscapes. As the first Lead Infinitely cohort concludes, the department celebrates a milestone in its ongoing commitment to leadership development and continuous improvement.
