Resident Graduation Celebrations
The Residency Graduation Banquet will be held at The Club on May 30 to honor our 21 physicians completing their four years of anesthesiology residency. We honor their outstanding commitment to the profession and wish them well as they pursue additional subspecialty training, join private practice groups, and transition into service as academic faculty members. Their accomplishments are numerous, and their hard work and dedication to excellence will be celebrated.

The annual Veterans Hospital Luncheon and Graduate Recognition Ceremony for residency graduates takes place on May 15 in the VA Hospital Auditorium. VA anesthesiology faculty participate in this ceremony to recognize the contributions of our residents in serving our veterans during the previous four years.

Site Visit
The Cardiothoracic Anesthesia Fellowship participated in a one-day virtual visit conducted by an ACGME site visitor. These site visits, generally held every 10 years, allow the ACGME to determine if accredited programs are in substantial compliance with the common program requirements, as well as their specialty-specific program requirements. Prior to the site visit, Program Director Dr. Brad Meers and a core group of administrative staff supporting the fellowship spent hundreds of hours preparing the requested site visit documentation and updating our web-based Accreditation Data System. Director of Education Dr. Harold Goss also facilitated a mock site visit on May 6 to help prepare all parties involved. All documentation was reviewed by leadership in our UAB Graduate Medical Education Office prior to submission. The site visit agenda included group meeting sessions with the program director and education administrator, cardiothoracic fellows, cardiothoracic faculty members, the anesthesiology chair, and GME staff. Many thanks to all faculty, fellows, and staff that supported this important accreditation process.

 Research Day 2025
Anesthesiology residents presented research posters at the departmental Research Day held May 5 at the Wallace Tumor Institute. This annual event provides an opportunity for all faculty, residents, fellows, and students to showcase their research projects. Many of our graduating residents satisfy their scholarly activity project requirement by presenting their research during Research Day; others satisfy this requirement by presenting their work at regional or national anesthesia conferences.

Out & About

Dr. Harold Goss attended the 2025 AHME Institute April 30-May 2 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Dr. Goss moderated "Beyond the White Coat: Cultivating Physician Identity in Healthcare."

Fundamentals of Critical Care Support (FCCS) Certification Course
Several PGY1 residents will earn their FCCS certification on May 17. This hands-on simulation workshop provides learners with skills for managing critically ill patients, especially care related to mechanical ventilation, monitoring, organ hypoperfusion, neurological support, and guidance for managing acute problems encountered in the ICU. Thanks to the entire simulation team for managing this course.
