Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive brain disorder that gradually deteriorates memory and cognitive abilities, eventually impairing the performance of basic tasks. One startling aspect of AD is that it typically remains dormant until one reaches the advanced age of 65 or older.
The Department of Neurology at the UAB Heersink School of Medicine focuses on identifying the disease's underlying causes, developing optimal treatment approaches, and conducting further research.

The UAB Department of Neurology hosted the Neurology Research Lunch and Learn: Finding Funding Opportunities on June 14, 2023, with guest speaker Rebecca Lee, MBA, director of Clinical Research Administration, and Jacquelyn Green, BBA, manager of Clinical Research Administration.
The speakers provided key information on discovering funding opportunities and included discussions on techniques for identifying funding sources, an introduction to the PIVOT research platform, and an overview of the grant submission procedures at UAB.

Standaert, M.D., Ph.D., was presented with the Parkinson Association of Alabama (PAA) Lifetime Achievement Award for his persistent and committed efforts to Parkinson’s Research throughout his career. He was honored at a surprise reception held at the Woodward House in Birmingham, AL as family, friends, colleagues, and others gathered to celebrate his long history of accolades and accomplishments.
