University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) startup company ResBiotic recently announced $14.5 million in funding, which includes an $8 million Series A round. The funding will help expand the company’s fast-growing line of products, grow retail and online distribution, and strengthen corporate operations.
ResBiotic, founded by C. Vivek Lal, M.D., Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics, focuses on the Gut-X axis, a way that the gut microbiome communicates with other organs in the body. By accessing the Gut-X axis, the company aims to develop wellness products that support full-body health through the gut. Lal said the latest round of fundraising is “not an endpoint, but a starting point,” noting that the $14.5 million gives the company momentum but is still “far less than what’s required to achieve the global health impact we aspire to.”
ResBiotic was the first to bring to market a product specifically designed to support lung health through the gut.
ResBiotic now has three products on shelves at Walmart locations nationwide, including:
- ResB Lung Support, a prebiotic supplement created with botanical ingredients and intended to support respiratory, immune, and digestive health.
- ResG Prebeet Energy+, a prebiotic supplement that includes beetroot, B12, and prebiotic fiber and is made to support heart health, digestion, and boost energy.
- ResM GLP-1 Postbiotic, a supplement created with metabolites and GLP-1 and designed to support metabolism, balance blood sugar, and help manage weight.
For Lal, the driving mission is ensuring that science doesn’t remain “locked away in publications and academia,” but instead reaches people in meaningful ways.
“We are doing our best to translate rigorous science into actual consumer impact,” he said. That commitment, he added, has shaped the company’s science-first consumer platform, which has been validated through preclinical and clinical trials and is now gaining traction through national retail partners.
Lal sees the company’s progress as just the start of a much larger journey. “We’re only at the beginning of reshaping the Gut-X axis for respiratory, metabolic, women, and bone health,” he said, " We are building a new category of wellness rooted in rigorous research, affordability, and access and we welcome partners who share this vision of bringing restoration biotics to every household."
