HR Updates

Effective October 1, 2026, UAB is updating its Sick Time Donation Policy and related procedures. The changes simplify how employees receive additional sick time through the Sick Time Pool and provide additional support for employees returning from continuous leave. Here's what is changing...

  • Direct sick time donations will be discontinued. Employees will no longer donate sick time directly to other employees or to the Sick Time Pool. The pool is now self-sustaining through unused sick leave transferred from employees who terminate employment or retire from UAB.
  • The lifetime Sick Time Pool maximum will increase from 240 to 480 hours. Previously, employees could receive up to 240 hours from the Sick Time Pool and an additional 240 hours through direct employee donations. With direct donations discontinued, eligible employees may now receive up to 480 hours directly from the Sick Time Pool over the course of their employment.
  • Eligible employees may receive a one-time grant of up to 40 hours of sick leave upon returning from continuous leave. This provision is intended to provide a temporary sick leave balance for employees who exhaust their available sick time while on leave as they begin rebuilding their accrued sick time.
