Responsibilities included: to insure that rare books, pamphlets, maps, manuscripts and other rare materials acquired by and held in the Wm. Stanley Hoole Special Collections Library (including The University of Alabama Archives) were accessioned, arranged and described in order to make them physically and intellectually accessible to researchers and physically to maintain the materials, many of which were in a fragile and deteriorating condition. Included in this charge are reference services, the preservation, arranging, classification and retrieval of sound and video taped recordings donated to the Hoole Special Collections Library, microcomputer applications appropriate to the needs of the staff and patrons of Special Collections, and the acquisition of required skills in audio and video recording, duplicating and production techniques to provide access to the information contained in these unique collections. With the Fall, 1991 term, began assigned duties of Project Manager for The University of Alabama Libraries' participation in the joint SOLINET (Southeastern Library Network)/SEARL (South Eastern Association of Research Libraries) preservation microfilming project.

For the summer recess each year Volunteers were assigned to three month projects: administered testing and conducted interviews for the (The Republic of the Philippines) National Bureau of Labor; evaluated the holdings of St. Paul's College Library (Ormoc City, Leyte) gave suggestions for appropriate acquisitions and designated areas of weakness for future attention.
