The entries above with the notation record label checklist are part of a continuing effort to document the output of jazz record companies. A small group/mailing list, the Jazz Label Listings Project Mailing List, was recently started by Michael Fitzgerald to support research in this area. Please note that all of these discographies and checklists do not live on Saturn Web; for many of the above I have merely provided links to their Web sites. If a discography lives on Saturn Web and has no one's name beside it it was done by Saturn's Webmaster. For those discographies which are housed on Saturn Web (i.e., those set in italic) please feel free to submit additions and corrections to Joe Moudry, Saturn's Webmaster. No discography is ever complete, comprehensive, or free from error, and thus corrections, additions, and annotations are always appreciated.

A few definitions may be in order, to clarify the terms used above:

A discography is defined as a listing of recordings in which the artist appears, with as much information as possible. Among the essential data required for me to call something a discography in the above listing are: track /composition titles; personnel for tracks; composer credits; publisher(s) & catalogue number(s); track timings; matrix data; &c.
A checklist, on the other hand, is a brief listing of the titles of recordings on which the artist appears.
A sessionography is the most comprehensive listing of all, trying to document all known sessions, recorded or not, of the artist. Rick Lopez has the most exciting examples of sesionographies that I'm aware of currently on the Web.

Please don't assume that I think less of checklists than discographies: they're the things that we all have on hand when we go record hunting and use most often when answering questions. It's simply that one must remember that for decades I earned my record money as an academic librarian working in the areas of collection development, bibliography, manuscripts and rare books, any one of which depends upon a rich flow of information that would bore most humans to distraction. These requirements simply follow me when I do my research in jazz.

And to answer those of you who have asked: Yes, I'm working on a checklist of Sun Ra's Saturn and related labels, but it will be some time before it's ready.
