Sun Ra Discography
Limbo for Unreleased Sessions: L1-L5
L1. There's supposed to be an unissued tape of Ra with Coleman
Hawkins and Stuff Smith (late 40s). [Danny Ray Thompson on WKCR]
L2. Ra and other Arkestrans, including Marshall Allen, made a
record with African percussionist Chief Bey for MGM, circa 1966.
Apparently this LP was never released.
L3. There is supposed to be a suite for keyboards called
Manhattan Undertones or Manhattan Undertone Symphony. Ra
described this as part of a 9-volume series of compositions about New
York City. Ra played a tape of the Introduction (mostly solo
synthesizer) on the WKCR Festival in 1987. About 5 min.; opens with
unaccompanied solo by Marshall Allen-as.
L4. In Boston, February 1992, Ra reportedly played excerpts
from a tape of a long Synclavier work. Further details of this work
are unknown. [rlc]
L5. An album of Sun Ra reciting his poetry is being prepared
for release by Blast First. There is some concern about sound quality.
