Welcome to the area of Saturn Web where I become more personal, less formal, and more general in my discussion of the various tyypes of jazz that I love. This will be the area where I place my Basic Collection lists (for Mainstream and Free Jazz, amongst others), discuss things outside of the realm of Free Jazz, and do other things that may not focus precisely on the basic charge of Saturn Web. Comments/reactions are always welcome, so don't hesitate to send e-mail my way about anything that appears herein.

The Station
I
began jocking at WUAL-FM in February 1982 when the station came of the air. As I remember, Tom Halliday preceeded me, having begun training earlier. Station Manager Bo Pittman was determined to offer a strong jazz presence from the beginning and set aside 22:30-01:00 hours nightly for locally produced jazz (in the early years WUAL was a solo station that signed off @ 01:00 hrs.).

I became a jock on WUAL thanks to my then department head, Martin Faigel (who has, alas, since left the planet). During a tedious budget prep. work-out he asked what I thought about the new station that was soon to begin operation. I did my predictable number about how jazz, if offered, would be done from a commercial perspective. Martin immediately called the station, which was in the midst of setting up offices, broadcast booths, &c. in an old house on campus, and made an appointment with Bo for me. Martin then gave me work-release time for the interview/appointment and said, in effect, to put up (volunteer to do a show) or shut up.

I put up, met Bo, did the training, and began my second incarnation as a jazz jock, doing Sunday and Monday night shows at the beginning of February 1982.

Other Offerings:
  • Playlists for both of my APR gigs: Classic Jazz and Creative Improv
Note: Unless otherwise indicated, all items in the playlists are compact discs (CDs). I have given complete citations so that anyone may use the regular channels to order a copy for their collections. Also please note that almost all of the material that I use for my shows is from my collection, so there's a chance that if you call the station and request something that your've heard on my programmes it may not be in the station's library, or may no longer be in print. If more information/help is needed, simply e-mail me.
