Saturn Biographies:
Frank Maas

Frank Maas (who's very glad to know the SATURN list)

* Personal data:

  • Born: August 4, 1959 (The Police: ... born in the fifties ...).

  • Home: Valkenswaard, a small town (31.000 inhabitants) near Eindhoven, in the southern part of The Netherlands (aka Holland), very close to the Belgian border. In Eindhoven, Jazzpower Foundation produces mainly modern jazz concerts once a week at the Wilhelmina. Otherwise, no interesting jazz to be heard nearby. Yes, it's a jazz desert here :)

  • Work: Legal adviser, and member of the local council (for the Dutch Labour Party: PvdA).

  • Mail: f_maas@wxs.nl (underscore between f and maas).

    * Jazz and the music of Sun Ra:

  • I'm producing a local radio programme on jazz, called Alabama (after the John Coltrane tune on his Impulse-album Live At Birdland, 1963).

  • Attending concerts (modern jazz/improvised music, punk and ska). See Concerts in Holland & Belgium and Punk and Ska Concerts in Europe

  • Recording concerts (video and audio), and promoting some musicians. See Palinckx: a great Dutch band

  • First record by Sun Ra I bought: Pictures Of Infinity (this is still one of my favourites - now on cd on the Black Lion label as: Outer Spaceways Incorporated).

  • Last record I bought: Space Is The Place (on Impulse).

  • Favourite albums (at this moment, June 4, 1998):
Pictures Of Infinity (Outer Spaceways Incorporated)
    The Solar-Myth Approach volume 1
The Heliocentric Worlds Of Sun Ra volumes 1 and 2
    Monorails And Satellites
My Brother the Wind volume 2
    The Singles
    video Space Is The Place
Live In California Kimball's East 1995 volumes 1 and 2 (Arkestra cassettes)

  • Concerts by the Arkestra I attended: at the North Sea Jazzfestival in The Hague in 1978 (great and very long concert, untill early in the morning!), and last year at the Paradox in Tilburg (home town of Palinckx), of course without Sun Ra himself, but a very good concert it was!

  • Special recordings I have: concert recordings of Joost Buis and his Famous Astronotes playing Sun Ra compositions (audio and video). Joost Buis is a young Dutch trombone player and composer who is researching the music of Sun Ra, esp. the compositions from the fifties. He used to be a member of the above mentioned band Palinckx. A cd might be produced this year ....

  • Trying to convince more people that the Sun Ra Arkestra is the best, I'm building a small Sun Ra page.
  • Thank you, members of the SATURN list, and above all the members of the Sun Ra Arkestra. If I can do anything for you .... translating texts, trying to get you contacts in The Netherlands, promoting your music, .... just let me know! Best wishes to you all!
